Higher Education In Haryana

To make Haryana a leading state educationally has been the principal concern of the State Government. The primary focus of the State Government is to provide quality and need based education to all. Education scene today in the state is at a tipping point. The higher education sector in Haryana is to respond to the dynamic changes happening all over the globe.

The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of the students in the higher education institutions in Haryana is 28.7 % as compared to the GER of 19.40% which is a result of state's welfare oriented incentive schemes including generous scholarship assistance.

  • Higher education plays a significant role in the development of a state.
  • The first university of the state was established in the year 1927 at Rohtak, which is currently named as Pandit Nekiram College.
  • Initially, this college was imparted education up to 12th standard only. In the year 1944, it was recognized for graduation.
  • The first degree college of the state is the SA Jain College, which was established in the year 1938.
  • In the year 1944, All India Jat Heroes Memorial Colleges was established in Rohtak and Vaishya College in Bhiwani.
  • Ahir University was established in the year 1945 in Rewari district of the state. After this, in the year 1946, Vaishya College was established in Rohtak.
  • There were only 6 universities (1 government and 5 non-government) in the state of Haryana at the time of independence to India.
  • At the time of formation of the state (1966) Haryana had only 1 university (Kurukshetra University) and 45 colleges.
  • According to the Higher Education Department of Haryana, there are currently 18 State Universities, 24 Private Universities and 1 Central University in the state.
  • Special provision for higher education for girls has been made in the state.
  • According to the Economic Survey 2020-21, out of the total 172 state schools, 69 schools are exclusively for girls.
  • There are 97 government - aided private colleges in the state out of which 35 are for girls.
  • The state of Haryana has some of the best universities in India, offering excellent research facilities. The varied universities offer education in diverse fields of law, sciences, technology, commerce and management, life sciences, arts and languages. Out of 105 Government Degree Colleges in the state, 53 relocated in rural areas and 26 are exclusively for women. The government opened 9 new government colleges and took over the running of one self-financing college during financial year 2014-15.

    Few of the prestigious universities in Haryana working towards the noble purpose of spreading knowledge, developing educated and skilled individuals include Kurukshetra University, Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, Guru Jambheshwar University etc. Haryana also boasts of one of the country's finest National Institutes of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra. Some of the other research institutes include National Brain Research Centre in Manesar and National Dairy Research Institute in Karnal. Kurukshetra University is one of the most reputed educational facilities of Haryana.
